Ingredients
-A large baking tray (size 20 x 15 centimetres)
- 10 thin filo pastry sheets
- 4 large apples (Golden Delicious or Granny Smith)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 100 millilitres apple juice
- 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 180 Celsius (356 Fahrenheit).
- Line the baking tray with a sheet of parchment paper, then set aside.
- Peel the apples, then core them and cut into thin slices (small enough that your 3 and 7 year old can handle without any issues).
- Place the filo pastry sheets on a work surface and lay them out flat. Brush each sheet with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Place the apple slices in the centre of the pastry and add the lemon juice and apple juice.
- Now comes the fun bit! Your 3 and 7 year old can help to roll up the pastry, starting at one end and working your way to the other. Have your kids give the dough a few gentle tucks here and there to secure it.
- Place the strudel on the parchment-lined baking tray and brush with melted butter.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, or until golden brown. And the strudel is done - don’t forget to smile - kids love smiles!
Recommended Sides
Apfelstrudel pairs perfectly with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream. Have fun with the toppings - choose your family favourites and enjoy.
