Ingredients
Idli Batter
- 1 cup Instant Idli Batter
- ¾ cup Curd
- 5 tablespoons Water
Toppings
- 1/2 cup Finely Chopped Onion
- 1/4 cup Finely Chopped Tomato
- 2 tablespoons Green Chili (diced small and deseeded)
- ¼ teaspoon Garam Masala
- 1 teaspoon Fresh Ginger (diced small)
- 1 tablespoon Oil
- 1/2 teaspoon Mustard Seeds (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
- 3-4 curry leaves (optional)
Directions
The following steps show how to make 4 servings of Chili Idli.
1. To Prepare the Idli Batter In a bowl, combine the instant idli batter, curd, and water and mix well.
2. To Prepare the Toppings In a separate bowl, mix together the onion, tomato, chili, garam masala, ginger, and oil.
3. To Cook the Idli Grease an idli plate or cake tin with oil. Pour the idli batter into the greased tin and spread it out evenly. Place the topping mixture on top of the batter.
4. Steam the Idli Place the idli plate into a steamer and cover with a lid. Cook the idli for around 10 minutes or until they become light and fluffy.
5. Tempering the Idli In a pan, heat the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and optional curry leaves over medium heat until they start spluttering and become fragrant. Pour the tempering over the idli and gently mix.
6. Serve Serve the Chili Idli with chutney or yogurt, and a dollop of butter (optional).
Tip: After the two boys complete mixing the ingredients for the topping, ask if they wanna play a game called “Who can find the bigger piece of tomato”. Winner gets to pick the garnish to add atop the Chili Idli.
