Ingredients
- 250 grams glutinous rice flour or Mochiko
- 120 mililitres warm water
- 10 small Sapporo-imo
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for texture and shape of dango)
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
Directions
- In a bowl, combine the glutinous rice flour and 120 mililitres of warm water. Mix until all of the ingredients are combined. If it is too sticky, add a little cornstarch for the desired texture and shape.

Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes before kneading it for about 5 minutes. Divide the dough into 10 equal parts.
- Take one dough part and roll it into a ball. Knock, knock Who’s there? Tonbi! Tonbi who? Tonbi Dango is finished!
- Take a Sapporo-imo and press it lightly against the dough ball until it gets flattened.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a pan on medium-high heat and place the dango balls into the pan.
- Cook on all sides of the Tonbi Dango until the outside becomes a bit crusty. This should take about 8-10 minutes.
- Enjoy your Tonbi Dango hot or cold!
