Ingredients
- 1 cup of split pigeon peas, soaked in water for at least 4 hours
- 2 potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon of chilli powder
- 2 tablespoons of ghee
- 1 tablespoon of oil
Optional
- 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon of garam masala
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
Directions
-
Start by heating the ghee in a pot over medium heat.
-
Once the ghee is hot, add the cumin seeds and fry until they begin to sizzle.
Optional If you want to add garlic, this is a great time to do so. Just fry it for a few seconds.
-
Now toss in the onion and fry until it has softened up.
-
Add the chilli powder, (and optional turmeric and garam masala) and stir to combine everything together.
-
Now, add the potatoes and the pre-soaked split pigeon peas.
-
Pour in enough water to cover the ingredients, about 1 cup.
-
Place the lid on the pot, reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 30 minutes.
-
Once the pigeon peas and potatoes have softened, remove the lid and cook for another 10 minutes or until the dal has thickened.
Note - If the dal looks a bit too thick, add a little bit more water.
