Ingredients
- 1 cup Moong Dal, (200g)
- 2.5 cups of water (600ml)
- 1 teaspoon of cumin powder (5g)
- 1 teaspoon of coriander powder (5g)
- 1 tablespoon of ghee (15g)
- 2 cloves of garlic (20g)
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper (2g)
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder (5g)
- 2 tablespoons of chopped coriander leaves (15g)
Directions
- Begin by washing the Moong Dal in plenty of water to remove any dirt or impurities.
- Put the washed Dal in a medium-sized saucepan and add in 2.5 cups of water.
- Turn the heat to medium-high and cover the saucepan with a lid.
- Let the Dal cook for 20 minutes, adding in more water if the Dal looks too dry.
- Once the Dal has cooked, add in the cumin powder, coriander powder, and turmeric powder.
- Stir the Dal to ensure that all the powder is mixed properly.
- Take a small separate frying pan and heat the ghee over medium-high heat.
- Add in the garlic and black pepper and sauté for a few minutes.
- Now add the fried garlic and black pepper to the Dal in the saucepan.
- Give it a good stir to make sure everything is mixed properly.
- Cover the saucepan with the lid and reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.
- Now turn off the heat and take off the lid and add the chopped coriander leaves.
- Give the Dal a good stir.
- And there you have it, your Moong Dal is ready to be served!
Recommended Sides
Serve this Dal with hot steamed rice or roti. To add some more flavor, you can add a dollop of ghee or butter to the Dal. You can also serve some raita or pickle on the side. If you are feeling adventurous, you can make some of Steve’s famous garlic chutney to go with the Dal. Enjoy!
