Ingredients

  • 2 cups of Japanese White Rice
  • 2 tablespoons of Teriyaki Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of Nori Seaweed
  • 2 tablespoons of Sesame Seeds

Directions

  1. Begin by filling a large pot or pan with 3 cups of water. Heat the water over high heat and bring it to a boil.
  2. Once boiling, add the Japanese White Rice to the pot and stir the mixture gently with a cooking spoon. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 8-10 minutes until the rice is cooked through.
  3. While the rice is cooking, line a tray with parchment paper and then sprinkle 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds onto a plate.
  4. Once the rice is cooked, turn off the heat and transfer it to a large mixing bowl.
  5. Allow the rice to cool down to room temperature. Once the rice has cooled, use a rubber spatula to lightly fluff the rice and mix in the 2 tablespoons of teriyaki sauce.
  6. Take a handful of the cooked rice and shape it into an oval with your hands. Make sure it is solid enough to hold its form. (Pro Tip: don’t stress too much about making it perfectly round - smiles and animal shapes are accepted here too! )
  7. Roll the shaped rice in sesame seeds and then wrap it with a sheet of Nori seaweed.
  8. Place the seaweed-wrapped Onigiris onto the prepared tray and set aside.
  9. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Once heated, add the Onigiris to the pan in a single layer.
  10. Cook each side of the Onigiri for about 4 minutes until the seaweed is lightly toasted and the rice is lightly browned.
  11. Once cooked, remove the Onigiris from the pan and serve warm. Enjoy!

Yaki Onigiri pairs well with a variety of side dishes. For a light and healthy meal, try serving it with a miso soup, Japanese salad, or steamed vegetables. For a heartier meal, serve it with stir-fried vegetables and cooked meats. You can also add a dollop of mayonnaise or sweet-and-sour sauce for extra flavor. Bon Appetit!
