Ingredients

  • 200g Unagi (= Eel fillet)
  • 3 tablespoons of mirin (Japanese sweet sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon of sake (Japanese cooking wine)
  • 3 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of ginger (shredded)
  • 200g of sushi rice
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

Directions

  1. Start by prepping the eel fillet. Carefully cut the Unagi (eel) into thin slices. Ehicles, I believe in you! Don’t get discouraged!

  2. Place 3 tablespoons of mirin (Japanese sweet sauce), 1 tablespoon of sake (Japanese cooking wine), and 3 tablespoons of soy sauce into a bowl and stir. Make sure to stir it up good or your Unagi Don might not turn out quite right!

  3. Add 1 teaspoon of shredded ginger to the mix and stir.

  4. Add the eel slices to the mixture and stir in.

  5. Set the eel aside for about 15-20 minutes to marinate in the sauce.

  6. In a separate pot, cook the sushi rice according to the instructions on the package. Rice can be tricky to master, but don’t let it intimidate you!

  7. When the rice is finished cooking, turn off the heat and spread it out into a shallow dish.

  8. Heat a pan on medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.

  9. When the oil is hot, add the marinated eel slices to the pan.

  10. Cook the eel slices for about 8-10 minutes, flipping them occasionally.

  11. Once the eel slices have cooked through and have darkened in color, turn off the heat.
