Ingredients
- 200g chana dal (split chickpeas)
- 100g jaggery
- 1 tsp ground cardamom
- 200g whole wheat flour
- Water
- Ghee (clarified butter) for cooking
Directions
- Prepare the Chana Dal Filling:
- Rinse the chana dal under cold water until the water runs clear.
- In a large pot, add the chana dal and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes or until the dal is cooked through.
- Drain the dal and transfer to a bowl. Mash the dal until smooth.
- Add the jaggery and cardamom to the dal, mixing well. Set aside.
- Make the Dough:
- In a separate bowl, combine the whole wheat flour with enough water to form a soft dough. Knead the dough for a few minutes until smooth. Let it rest for 15 minutes.
- Assemble the Puran Poli:
- Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball.
- Flatten each ball and place a spoonful of the chana dal filling in the center.
- Enclose the filling by bringing the edges of the dough together and sealing it well.
- Roll out each filled dough ball into a circle, like a chapati.
- Cook the Puran Poli:
- Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and add a little ghee.
- Cook each Puran Poli for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through.
- Repeat with the remaining Puran Poli.

- Serve the Puran Poli warm with a dollop of ghee or a drizzle of honey. Enjoy the sweet treat with your little ones!
