Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of cooking oil
  • 1 matsutake mushroom (about 200g or 7 ounces), fresh or thawed if frozen
  • 1 cup (200g or 7 ounces) of Japanese short grain rice
  • 1 cup (240ml) of water
  • 2 tablespoons (28g) of soy sauce

Directions

  1. Gather your ingredients and make sure all of them are close on your kitchen counter.

  2. Heat the cooking oil in a medium-sized pot on the stove over medium heat.

  3. While that’s heating up, take the matsutake mushroom and clean it thoroughly. Cut into small cubes, about 0.5 pm thick.

  4. When the pot is hot, add the mushroom cubes and cook them for about 5 minutes.

  5. Measure the rice and rinse it in a strainer with cold water.

  6. When the mushrooms are cooked, add the rice and soy sauce to the pot.

  7. Pour the water into the pot and stir everything together.

  8. Clean up and wait.

  9. Put a lid on the pot and turn the heat down. Let it cook on low heat for 25 minutes.

  10. After 25 minutes, check to see if the rice is cooked. If not, turn the heat up slightly and cook for a few more minutes.

  11. Once the rice is cooked, take it off the heat and put a lid on it to let it steam for 5 minutes.

  12. Time to eat! Even your toddlers can help out and enjoy this Matsutake Gohan. Bon appétit!

Your Matsutake Gohan would taste great with a side of steamed vegetables, like broccoli, carrots, or mushrooms. Or, you can make a simple miso soup - it’s easy enough that even your toddlers can help make it!
