Ingredients

  • 1  cup black chickpeas (kala chana, kadala) soaked overnight
  • 1 medium-size onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 inch ginger, minced
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground red chili pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 medium potatoes, boiled and diced
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk
  • Lemon juice to garnish
  • Chopped cilantro to garnish

Directions

  1. Begin by soaking the black chickpeas overnight to help reduce the cooking time.
  2. In a pan, heat the oil and sauté the onions over medium heat until translucent.
  3. Add the minced ginger and garlic and stir together.
  4. Add in the spices (garam masala, turmeric, cumin powder, coriander powder, and red chili pepper) and mix well.
  5. reduce the heat and add the chickpeas and stir to combine.
  6. Add enough water to cover the chickpeas and bring it to a boil.
  7. Lightly joke - Now it’s time to turn up the heat!
  8. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes or until the chickpeas are tender.
  9. Add the boiled and diced potatoes as well as the coconut milk.
  10. Simmer for another 10 minutes.
  11. Finally, add salt and black pepper to taste.
  12. Garnish the kadala curry with some freshly chopped cilantro and a squeeze of lemon juice.
