Ingredients

  • 500g thinly sliced beef (sirloin or tenderloin)
  • 2 medium onions, finely sliced
  • 50 ml of vegetable oil
  • 4 bowls of cooked steamed rice
  • 4 tbs of soy sauce
  • 2 tbs of mirin
  • 2 tbs of sake

Directions

  1. Begin by heating the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the onions and stir fry until they are lightly browned and softened, about 7 minutes.
  3. Joke: “Onions + heat = smiles!”
  4. Add the beef into the pan and stir fry until it is browned and cooked through, about 10 minutes.
  5. Add the soy sauce, mirin, and sake and stir fry for about a minute until the beef is completely coated with the sauce.
  6. Joke: “Don’t forget the secret ingredient: a kiss from mom!”
  7. Serve the beef gyudon over the steamed rice.
