Ingredients

  • 1 cup of split pigeon peas, soaked in water for at least 4 hours
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of chilli powder
  • 2 tablespoons of ghee
  • 1 tablespoon of oil

Optional

  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garam masala
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced

Directions

  1. Start by heating the ghee in a pot over medium heat.

  2. Once the ghee is hot, add the cumin seeds and fry until they begin to sizzle.

Optional If you want to add garlic, this is a great time to do so. Just fry it for a few seconds.

  1. Now toss in the onion and fry until it has softened up.

  2. Add the chilli powder, (and optional turmeric and garam masala) and stir to combine everything together.

  3. Now, add the potatoes and the pre-soaked split pigeon peas.

  4. Pour in enough water to cover the ingredients, about 1 cup.

  5. Place the lid on the pot, reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 30 minutes.

  6. Once the pigeon peas and potatoes have softened, remove the lid and cook for another 10 minutes or until the dal has thickened.

Note – If the dal looks a bit too thick, add a little bit more water.
