Ingredients

  • 2 large apples, cored, peeled, and finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • A pinch of ground cloves
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup oats
  • 2 tablespoons condensed milk

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375° Fahrenheit (190° Celsius).

  2. In a small bowl, combine the apples, lemon juice, margarine, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour and walnuts. Add the melted butter, brown sugar, and vanilla essence to the bowl and stir until combined.

  4. In a third bowl, mix together the whole wheat flour, oats, and condensed milk until it forms a thick dough.

  5. Grease four 5-inch round oven-proof dishes with butter or oil and divide the apple mixture evenly between the dishes.

  6. Spoon the walnut mixture evenly over each dish.

  7. Top with the oat and whole wheat flour dough, pressing down lightly with a spoon.

  8. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.

  9. When the croustades are ready, take them out from the oven carefully and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
