Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup skimmed milk
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ¾ cup diced onion
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups skimmed chicken/vegetable stock
  • ½ teaspoon dried sage
  • ½ cup grated Cheddar cheese

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).

  2. Mix together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, garlic powder, and a pinch of black pepper in a large bowl.

  3. Add the vegetable shortening and use your hands to mix until it resembles a crumble.

  4. Add the skimmed milk until a dough forms.

  5. Lightly dust a work surface with all-purpose flour and roll out the dough.

  6. Cut the dough into biscuit shapes and place in a greased oven-safe dish.

  7. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

  8. Heat the oil in a saucepan and add the diced onion and minced garlic. Fry for 3-4 minutes, stirring often.

  9. Add the 2 tablespoons of flour and stir well.

  10. Gradually add the stock and stir until thickened.

  11. Add the sage and season with a pinch of pepper.
